Known for its omurice and the lively chef behind the counter, Kichi Kichi has built a reputation for theatrics, personality, and a dining experience that feels more like a little performance than a conventional meal. I went in curious, especially because seats are limited and getting a spot can be part of the challenge.
A Small, Highly Anticipated Experience
One of the first things to know about Kichi Kichi is that this is not a huge restaurant with endless tables. I had to queue early about 4PM, and I was told to come back after two hours.
The chef is incredibly lively, engaging with diners and turning the preparation and plating of the omurice into a performance. There is a lot of energy, movement, and playful theatrics, and it is easy to see why so many people remember the experience.
The Theatrics Are the Highlight
I have to give Kichi Kichi credit for entertainment value. The chef’s personality is a huge part of the experience, and the preparation of the omurice is presented with plenty of flair. If you enjoy restaurants where the chef interacts with the room and the meal comes with a side of entertainment, there is a lot to appreciate here.
It is also the kind of place that makes for a memorable travel story. You do not simply sit down, eat, and leave. You watch, laugh, take in the performance, and leave with something to talk about.
But Honestly, I Expected More From the Food
Here is where my experience diverged from the hype.
While I enjoyed the theatrics and found the chef genuinely lively, I did not think the food itself was that great. The omurice was certainly fun to watch being made, but for me, the performance was more memorable than the actual taste.
That is not to say the food was terrible. It just did not live up to the level of excitement and anticipation I had built up before visiting. If I were judging the experience purely on the entertainment, Kichi Kichi would have plenty to talk about. When it came to the food, however, I found myself wishing for a little more.
Is Kichi Kichi Worth Visiting?
I think it depends on what you are looking for. If your goal is to experience a famous Kyoto food spot, see a charismatic chef in action, and enjoy a meal that feels like a performance, Kichi Kichi is certainly memorable.
If your main priority is having an outstanding omurice that you will remember primarily for its flavor, my experience was more mixed.
For me, Kichi Kichi was ultimately more about the show than the food. The limited seating, lively chef, and theatrical presentation made it a fun experience, but the meal itself did not quite match the excitement surrounding the restaurant.
Final Thoughts
Kichi Kichi is one of those places where the story of the meal may stay with you longer than the meal itself. I enjoyed the energy, the personality, and the theatrics, and I am glad I got to experience it in Kyoto.
Would I go back purely for the food? No. But would I recommend experiencing it if you enjoy fun, theatrical dining and want to see what all the buzz is about?
